Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program whose mission is to provide creative problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Through solving open-ended problems students develop creative thinking skills that can be applied to real-life situations.

The Creativity Award is presented to an individual or organization to recognize outstanding contributions to the development of human creativity, extraordinary creativity in a personal achievement, or the application of creativity to benefit society.

Odyssey organizers presented the award to Canstruction President Cheri Melillo and Treasurer Deborah Gill at their closing awards ceremony, proclaiming to an audience of 16,000 Odyssey competition finalists, coaches and officials that Canstruction was selected to receive this year's award, “because just like Odyssey of the Mind, Canstruction emphasizes teamwork, thinking outside-of-the-box, learning about the arts and beyond, volunteerism, enjoying camaraderie in competition – as well as a love for interesting and sometimes wacky structures! It works to lift spirits of those in need as well as those attending and participating in the events. Not only does Canstruction feed hunger, it feeds people's hunger for artistic expression, having fun, and helping others.”

Seth Shannon, Chair of the Des Moines Canstruction Competition, erected a sample structure to anchor a booth that played videos of Canstruction media coverage, while Odyssey volunteers handed out Canstruction brochures and flashing pins of the “One Can” man.

Past award recipients include NASA, the Library of Congress, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Walt Disney and Walt Disney World Company.
