Canstruction receives “Creativity of the Mind Award at the "Odyssey of the Mind 2009 World Finals."

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program whose mission is to provide creative problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Through solving open-ended problems students develop creative thinking skills that can be applied to real-life situations.

The Creativity Award is presented to an individual or organization to recognize outstanding contributions to the development of human creativity, extraordinary creativity in a personal achievement, or the application of creativity to benefit society.

Portland Students Bring Canstruction to Governor

In conjunction with the Portland Oregon Canstruction Competition, four high school students active in the ACE Mentorship Program worked with the Portland Chapter of SDA and Glumac Engineering to create a canstruction that was displayed during Hunger Awareness Week at the Oregon State Capital in Governor Ted Kulongowski’s reception area. Using Autodesk Revit software the students designed and built an apple symbolizing good health and education. The sculpture remained on exhibit for two months; a testament to the structural integrity of the students’ design. Our thanks to high school seniors Reina Satoh, Daniela Sifuentes, Ana Ponce and Nelson Brooks for introducing Canstruction to the Governor and visitors to the Capital. Kudos to SDA Member Leslie Franken for coordinating this special project.

Canstruction Opens NeoCon in Chicago

The 2nd Annual Chicago Canstruction kicked off the 2008 NeoCon World’s Trade Fair at the Merchandise Mart Apparel Center on June 6th. The over 50,000 attendees to Neocon will get to feast their eyes not only on the latest furniture and fixtures the world’s top designers are unveiling, but on 20 fantastic structures designed and built by some of Chicago’s top architecture and engineering firms. Over 86,000 full cans of food are incorporated into the structures that will all be donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. Local Chicago celebrity jurors including author and TV host Alpana Sing; Metromix reporter Billy Dec; CS magazine President, John Carroll; and Chef Jimmy Bannos joined architect Zoka Zola and engineer Craig Vespa to declare this year’s winners that included Jurors' Favorite by Nagle Hartray for Can-tastic Voyage. Hats off to event organizers Tracy Mathieu, Heather McGuinn, Heather Askew, Susan Campbell and Megan Briars for a terrific event!

Canstruction Executive Director Helps to Open the 6th Annual Vancouver Competition

Canstruction, Inc. President/Executive Director, Cheri Melillo, was thrilled to be on hand for opening festivities at the 6th Annual Vancouver Canstruction Competition hosted at Vancouver’s Cruise Ship Terminal, February 22 - 26. Cheri arrived just in time to cheer on the 21 fearless teams as they hustled to erect their structures. A total of 120,000 cans were incorporated into the structures that were designed around the theme “Books & Bytes.” A 360° interactive walkthrough of the competition is available here. Winners included Jurors’ Favorite “Can Pooh Reach the Honey?” by AMEC and Structural Ingenuity winner Levelton Consultants, Inc. for “Breaching Hunger”. Levelton used a whopping 12,800 cans in the creation of a giant Orca whale leaping out of the water. Co-Chairs Margot Paris and Janice Podmore along with Cheryl Perpchuk, Exec. Director of the food bank, and her outstanding staff and volunteers put together a fantastic event. At the close of the exhibition all of the food in the structures and donated by the public will be distributed by the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society to families in need.

Canstruction at the Super Bowl

The Arizona Super Bowl XLII Host Committee asked Canstruction to design and build two “Giant” football helmets at the Chandler Fashion Center as part of the Super Bowl weekend festivities. Phoenix Canstruction, under the leadership of Lauren Neu, pulled together a special team of architects and engineers to design and build the helmets. Safeway donated all the canned food and it was publicized as a “kid friendly” activity for families in town for the Super Bowl.
