| Press Release: | The 2009 Melbourne canstruction project is in full swing with 25 Primary and Secondary Schools from across Melbourne taking part this year. Canstruction in Melbourne Australia began as a dream of a small group of educational leaders from Victorian Department of Education schools in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, as they went looking for a concept to engage Middle Years students in an in-depth study of Mathematics, Science and eLearning. A chance sighting of images of previous winners of canstruction projects in the USA and Canada captured our imagination and set the schools upon the road to becoming the Melbourne chapter of this international charitable concept. Cheri Melillo the International Director of Canstruction in New York worked tirelessly to support our team to set up and run the first canstruction project in Australia with the youngest group of participants in the world in 2008. Five Schools, 25 teams, 300 participants, and over 30,000 cans of food went into the project in the first year. The public and the media were stunned by the teamwork, ingenuity, and designs of the students and from that point we knew this was a winning concept. The success of the project we believe is the authentic connection and mentoring relationships between the schools from the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood and the community partners involved. Monash University, The Salvation Army, PLANET GIVE, Gasco Engineering and the canned food producers took an idea and made it into a reality and we are so pleased that each of these companies are helping to grow the concept further this year. Our expectation is that this year will be bigger and better than ever with over 25 schools across Victoria taking part and all food and money collected being sent to families affected by the 2009 Victorian Bushfires and to Salvation Army Food Banks. Student teams will work closely with an Engineering student from Monash University to design and build their canstruction and then PLANET GIVE will help the students decide where their philanthropic giving will be channeled. The PLANET GIVE process itself is quite innovative. The Salvation Army has been very generous in firstly educating students about the needs of bushfire affected communities in Victoria and secondly allowing the students to be an active part of the process of identifying innovative ways to support these communities in their rebuilding processes. This year a huge amount of planning and effort has gone into refining the canstruction process for use in Australian schools in years 5 – 8. Running from the canstruction 2009 launch on July 29 to the canstruction build on August 26, 27 at Monash University, the month long program allows for many new schools across the country to join the program in coming years. |
