| Press Release: | Canstruction in Melbourne Australia began as a dream of a small group of educational leaders from Victorian Department of Education schools in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, as they went looking for a concept to engage Middle Years students in an in-depth study of Mathematics, Science and eLearning. A chance sighting of images of previous winners of canstruction projects in the USA and Canada captured our imagination and set the schools upon the road to becoming the Melbourne chapter of this international charitable concept. Cheri Melillo the International Director of Canstruction in New York worked tirelessly to support our team to set up and run the first canstruction project in Australia with the youngest group of participants in the world in 2008. Five Schools, 25 teams, 300 participants, and over 30,000 cans of food went into the project in the first year. The public and the media were stunned by the teamwork, ingenuity, and designs of the students and from that point we knew this was a winning concept. 2009 was another incredible success and a powerful learning experience for all involved. 35,000 cans of food were donated to families, and over 20 schools participated. The success of the project we believe is the authentic connection and mentoring relationships between the schools from the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood and the community partners involved. Monash University, The Salvation Army, PLANET GIVE, Gasco Engineering and the canned food producers took an idea and made it into a reality. Canstruction Melbourne 2009 became one of the first National Australia Bank’s School First Impact winners, and the $50,000 prize money anables it to grow in the coming years. Our expectation is that 2010 will be bigger and better than ever with approximtely 30 schools across Victoria taking part, equating to 300 students. Student teams will work closely with an Engineering student from Monash University to design and build their canstruction. This year we aim to attract 30-50 engineering businesses, who will be able to sponsor and support each of our canstruction teams. A huge amount of planning and effort has gone into refining the canstruction process for use in Australian schools in years 5 – 8. Running from the canstruction 2010 launch on August 6th to the canstruction build on September 8th and 9th at Monash University, the month long program allows for many new schools across the country to join the program in coming years. |
