NEW YORK, NY, OCTOBER 20, 2011 – An exhibition of giant sculptures that not only feed the imagination of those who view them but also literally help feed the hungry. That is the premise of CanstructionĀ®, the wacky, wonderful and truly unique annual international charity competition conceived by the Society for Design Administration. Architects, engineers, contractors and the students they mentor, compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from full cans of food. With incredible support from the New York Chapter of the Society for Design Administration, City Harvest, the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter and many other dedicated volunteers, CanstructionĀ® New York is a brilliant public relations event aimed at shining a spotlight on the design and construction industry while increasing awareness of hunger issues in our world and raising thousands of pounds of food for the food insecure of New York City. In New York’s 19th annual event, 26 teams will compete to build the most incredible sculpture beginning at 6:30pm on November 9, 2011. The structures will be on exhibit in locations throughout the World Financial Center from November 10 – November 21, 9am – 6pm daily. The exhibition will close at 5pm on November 21 when the sculptures will go through DeCanstruction and all of the food from the structures, along with the food contributions from the public, will be donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. The entrance to the Canstruction exhibit at the WFC is 220 Vesey Street. To schedule a school trip to Canstruction, please contact email@canstructionny.org and reference ā€˜School Tour.’ continued…

For the fourth year now, Arts World Financial Center will present this amazing exhibition, which is organized by Canstuction New York, Inc. and the New York Chapters of the Society for Design Administration and the American Institute of Architects. Joining in the efforts this year is Move for Hunger, a non-profit organization that works to support the efforts of our nation’s food banks by providing transportation for food pick up. They have tapped iMoveGreen to move all of the participating teams’ cans from each office to the World Financial Center in preparation for the November 9, 2011 build night. The number of people relying on food pantries to bridge the gap to their next paycheck has increased dramatically in the past few years. The pantries and soup kitchens have been forced to turn new clients away and reduce the amount of food they provide to their current clients because supply simply cannot keep pace with demand. The giant structures in the Canstruction exhibit and their compelling mission statements raise the public’s level of awareness and move them to take action. Last year, the structures alone yielded over 68,800 pounds of food, which helped to feed nearly 70,000 hungry New Yorkers. When the food from the structures was combined with the donations from the public, the event produced nearly 88,000 pounds of food. Our goal this year is to double that number by increasing contributions from the public. We encourage all those who come to view the structures to bring a can of high quality food to the exhibition’s collection station. Together we can make a difference and succeed in the fight against hunger.
IT STARTS WITH ONE CAN. TO FEED THE HUNGRY. TO LIFT THE SPIRIT. TO CHANGE THE WORLD.
