Canstruction Competitions Pay Homage to Art, Environment, and Obama Winners Announced from the 13TH Annual International Canstruction Competition During the latest cycle of local Canstruction competitions held around the world, the assortment of structures created went well beyond human imagination. From baby dinosaurs hatching from eggs to exact replicas of fine art, the creations were astounding. A prestigious jury was convened in Nashville in August and the International winners were declared. Favorite with a stunning rendition of Brancusi’s “Sleeping Muse.” Its sculptural purity and simple elegance made an indelible impression on the judges. The Structural Ingenuity award went to Cincinnati firm McGill Smith Punshon, Inc. Titled “Tightening Down Hunger,” it was a gravity-defying structural feat depicting a screwdriver balanced on the head of a screw representing a “tool” to fight hunger. The judges noted that it was a clean, striking structure with a clear message while dramatically clever. Best Use of Labels went to the team of Glumac, GBD Architects, and ACE Mentor Students from Portland for their structure titled “Yes We CAN”. Their depiction of President Obama represented hope and positive change achievable against insurmountable odds. The judges were impressed with its superb pixilation and nuanced shading created by the slight turn of a can. They felt it was a tribute to President Obama’s understanding of food security. Winning Best Meal was “CANda Hunger End?” a giant Panda in a bamboo forest by Gensler’s New York City office. Their statement was simply that the plight of the Panda is not unlike the struggle mankind has with ending world hunger. The judges loved it for its global theme and well-articulated message. Two Honorable Mentions were also named. The “CANS Before Time” by Vancouver firm, Accenture was loved by the judges for its whimsical nature and appeal to all ages. “Green Eggs & Spam” by Norfolk’s Paul Finch & Associates, P.C. impressed the judges with its massiveness and humorous play on words.
