Canstruction Goes Hollywood!
at 10th Annual North American Competition
June 17, 2006 – This year’s 10th Annual North American (soon to be international) Canstruction Competition Awards Ceremony paid tribute to its host city, Los Angeles, by adopting the Oscar¼ tradition of selecting five nominees in each category before those famous words “and the envelope please” were uttered revealing the winners. Architects, engineers, designers and contractors competed, or mentored student teams, who designed and built structures made entirely from full cans of food. At the close of the amazing canned sculpture exhibits that resulted in the fifty-five cities hosting competitions, all of the food incorporated in the structures was donated to local food banks for distribution to those most in need. This June Canstruction celebrates the completion of its first decade as the most unique food drive in the world to aid in the fight against Hunger. Five hundred structures were built in the 2005-2006 annual July to June cycle, yielding a total of 1.5 million pounds of food. 330 local competition winners from across North America went on to compete in L.A. through slide photography. The jury convened on June 6th at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel as part of the Society for Design Administration and American Institute of Architects national conventions. A Winner is declared in each of the following categories: Jurors’ Favorite, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Most Cans and there are two Honorable Mentions. Each structure competes in the same category it won locally. The difficult task of choosing the final seven winning sculptures fell to a star-studded jury drawn from luminaries of the Los Angeles design and construction industry. This year’s jury included:

1. Jurors’ Favorite Award One Sardine is Not Enough
designed by Gordon Huether & Partners
