The Art of the Meal
Canstructions might just be the biggest food fight in Canada. The winners stack the odds in their favour.
Story by / Par Marie-France Chassé
Playing with your food isnât a breach of etiquette for the engineers, architects and students who build Canstructions every year â itâs an art form. Part pop art exhibition, part charity drive, the annual sculpture competition uses canned food as its medium and stocks food banks as part of its message. Professional design teams erect ambitious structures like Snoopy on his doghouse, which took the prize-winning Vancouver team 131/2 hours, a record 12,691 cans and detailed blueprints to build last year. There are local competitions across North America (including Halifax, Toronto and Vancouver) and a face-off is held annually by the Society of Design Administration. Each sculpture typically takes between 2,000 and 3,000 cans of food to build, says event director Cheri Melillo, proving that in this case, the creatorsâ eyes are deïŹnitely bigger than their stomachs.
